MANKATO, Minn. – The UNW Men's Soccer Team suffered a loss to the second ranked team in the UMAC, Bethany Lutheran, on Tuesday night. Despite similar attempts in shots and shots on goal, the Vikings came away with the 2-0 victory.
In Mankato, Northwestern pressured the Vikings' back line right from the start, testing the keeper multiple times in the opening minutes.
Simeon Friesen (Mounds View, Minn./Homeschool) took the first shot for the Eagles in the fourth minute, barely missing wide. Northwestern's attack continued until Bethany Lutheran intercepted the ball in a lethal position, leading to the Vikings' opening goal in the 15
th minute. The Vikings maintained their momentum following the goal, keeping the Eagles out of the 18 yard box for the remainder of the first half.
Bethany fired first out of the break to extend their lead to two. Though Northwestern out-shot the Vikings 7-4 in the second half, the Eagles could not push a shot past the goalkeeper. The game finished with a 0-2 score. The Eagles remain fourth in the UMAC with a record of 4-4-3.
Jared Mojardin (Denver, Colo./Northeast Early College),
Julian Ortiz Menjivar (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul), and Friesen each tallied 2 shots, and
Michael Machuca (Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island) corralled 3 shots while in goal.
The Eagles will wrap their final regular season away game at the University of Minnesota Morris at 1 PM on Saturday.
