ST. PAUL, Minn. – University of Northwestern Men's Lacrosse hosted Northland College on Saturday afternoon for their third conference contest of the season. The Eagles fell 7-5 to the Lumberjacks, dropping their first MLC game of the season.
Prior to the game, UNW celebrated Senior Day. Eagle seniors
Khoa Vu (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee),
Thomas Alderson (Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead),
Isaac Geurink (Wausau, Wis./Wausau East), and
Joseph Kalski (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) were each recognized as they compete in their final seasons for Northwestern.
UNW jumped ahead early in the game as Alderson scored just 39 seconds after the opening whistle. The Lumberjacks tied the game later in the first quarter with a man-up goal.
Early in the second quarter, Alderson turned around a man-down situation and scored his second goal of the game to put UNW back in front.
Austin Lemke (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Saint Croix Lutheran Academy) followed a minute later with a man-up goal, assisted by
Sam Moses (Wausau, Wis./Wausau East), to put Northwestern ahead 3-1.
The Lumberjacks went on to score the next four goals, taking a 5-3 lead with just 29 seconds to go in the third quarter.
Ryan Adkins (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) proceeded to win the ensuing faceoff, fly down the field, and score with just four seconds to go in the period to bring the Eagles back withing one, down 5-4.
In the final quarter, Northland scored twice to go up 7-4. The Eagles scored one more goal courtesy of Moses, but were unable to rally as they fell 7-5 to the Lumberjacks.
On defense,
Jakob Montesi (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) and Vu tied for the team lead in caused turnovers with three.
Robert McHenry (Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) had nine saves in goal.
Christian Mitchell (Oak Grove, Minn./PACT Charter School) played one minute and 44 seconds in goal for the Eagles, earning one save while not allowing any goals.
Adkins dominated the faceoffs for the Eagles, going 12-for-14 and picking up eight ground balls in the game.
Up next, Northwestern will travel to University of Dubuque on Saturday, April 22 for a 1:00 p.m. conference road game.
