ORLANDO, Fla. – University of Northwestern Women's Tennis took on Covenant College and King's College on Monday for the first two of five matches in Florida this week. The Eagles opened the day with a 6-3 win over the Scots and closed it with a 9-0 sweep of the Monarchs.
Match One: Covenant College Scots
UNW opened their match against Covenant with a pair of doubles wins.
Annie Orvis (Rochester, Minn/Schaeffer Academy) and
Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) took the #1 match 8-5.
Domiano Baideme (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) and
Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) won the #2 match 8-3 for the Eagles. The Scots took the #3 match 8-4, but Northwestern's doubles success set them up to need only three wins in singles to take the team win.
Covenant took the #1 singles match 6-1, 6-2 to tie the team score up at 2-2. Jarchow put UNW back up 3-2 with a 6-3, 1-6, (10-7) win at the #4 match.
Taylar Smith (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) won a 6-1, 6-3 victory at #5 singles.
Analise Marquardt (Parkers Prairie, Minn./Parkers Prairie) took the #6 match 6-2, 2-6, (10-8) giving UNW the match-clinching fifth point. The Scots took the #2 match 6-1, 6-1, but Johnson closed out the contest with a 6-3, 7-5 win at #3 singles to seal the 6-3 win for UNW.
Match Two: King's College Monarchs
In the evening match against King's, the Eagles soared to a 9-0 sweep. In doubles,
Caitlyn Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) and
Grace Buswell (Winona, Minn/Winona) won the #2 match 8-3. Baideme and Jarchow then took the #1 doubles contest 8-6. Northwestern won the #3 doubles match by default, thus giving UNW a 3-0 lead heading into singles.
The Eagles were given the #6 singles match by default, putting them up 4-0 and needing just one point for the team win. They ending up winning all five remaining singles matches to clinch the 9-0 sweep. Orvis took her #1 match 6-0, 3-6, (10-7). Johnson won #2 singles 6-0, 6-1. Marquardt earned a 6-2, 6-0 win at #3 singles. Dodge clinched #4 singles 6-0, 6-3. Baumgarn closed out the matches with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at #5 singles.
