Men’s Basketball’s Season Concludes in UMAC Tournament Semifinals as Eagles Fall 69-59 at UW-Superior

SUPERIOR, Wis. – University of Northwestern Men's Basketball traveled up to University of Wisconsin-Superior on Friday for a semifinal showdown in the UMAC Tournament. The No. 3 seed Eagles fell 69-59 to the No. 2 Yellowjackets, ending UNW's season in the postseason tournament.

Senior forward Kyle Kaemingk (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) had a dominant game in his final outing as an Eagle, leading all players with 28 points on 50.0 percent (10-for-20) shooting, knocking down 40.0 percent (4-for-10) of his three-point shots, and hauling in nine rebounds.
 
UW-Superior started strong out the gate, going up 10-5 in the first five minutes of the game. The Eagles rallied with a 7-0 run to take a 12-10 lead and built that lead up to seven points at 20-13 halfway through the opening half. UWS would chip away at UNW's lead until taking it back with a three-pointer to go up 23-22 with less than six minutes until halftime. The two teams traded shots down the stretch in the first half with the Yellowjackets taking a 33-29 lead going into halftime.
 
UNW retook the lead early in the second half as the both squads battled neck and neck. Parker Behne (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) hit a three-pointer, one in his 3-for-3 shooting day from long range, to tie the game up for the last time at 45-45 with 11:24 to go. The Yellowjackets then went on a 7-0 run to take a lead they would not surrender, outscoring the Eagles 24-14 in the final 10 minutes of the game en route to the 69-59 final.
 
Points off of turnovers were critical in the game, as UW-Superior outscored Northwestern in that statistic 22-to-4. The Yellowjackets had 13 steals contributing to 17 turnovers for the Eagles. UNW had three steals contributing to five UWS turnovers.
  
Northwestern finished their 2022-23 season with a 14-12 overall record, going 9-5 in conference play. The Eagles averaged 78.3 points per game, shot 45.0 percent from the field, made 37.5 percent of their three-point attempts, and knocked down 75.1 percent of their free throws. UNW also averaged 39.8 rebounds and 15.0 assists per game.
