UMAC-Champion Eagles Close Regular Season with 77-49 Win at MLC, Enter Postseason with 13-1 Conference Record

NEW ULM, Minn. – University of Northwestern Women's Basketball traveled to Martin Luther College on Saturday afternoon for their regular season finale. The Eagles took down the Knights 77-49 to finish the regular season with a 17-8 overall record and a 13-1 record against UMAC opponents. UNW clinched the UMAC Regular Season Championship last weekend, locking in the Eagles as the #1 seed in the upcoming UMAC Tournament.

The Eagles flew out the gate with a 28-point first quarter. UNW shot 55.6 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from beyond the arc in the opening 10 minutes. Northwestern's defense, meanwhile, held the Knights to 15 points on 33.3 percent shooting in the opening frame.

UNW's shooting cooled off in the second quarter, though the Eagles still outscored the Knights 18-14 to go to halftime with a 17-point lead up 46-29.

Northwestern continued their strong play into the second half. UNW outscored Martin Luther 21-15 in the third quarter, increasing their lead to 23 points up 67-44.

In the fourth quarter, both teams' offenses went cold as the Eagles made four baskets from the field and the Knights made two. Nonetheless, UNW was able to push their lead as high as 30 points on a Jasmine Sondrol (Grand Forks, N.D./Red River) layup that put Northwestern ahead 75-45 with just under four minutes to play en route to the 77-49 victory.

Northwestern finished the game with a 41.8 percent (28-for-67) clip from the floor and a 33.3 percent (11-for-33) average from beyond the arc. Martin Luther shot 30.6 percent (19-for-62) in the game and 21.1 percent (4-for-19) from three-point range.

Megan McGeough (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) led UNW with 17 points and seven rebounds in 23 minutes off the bench, shooting 6-for-9 from the field and 4-for-5 from long range, and had three blocks on the defensive end. Lexi Hagen (Jordan, Minn./Jordan) followed with 13 points and six rebounds. Livvy Grosz (New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony) had a team-high three assists. Sondrol led the Eagles with four blocks. Annika Dykstra (New Brighton, Minn./Avail Academy) had a team-high three steals in just six minutes off the bench.

Up next, #1 seed Northwestern will open the UMAC Tournament on Wednesday, February 22 with a 7:00 P.M. home playoff game in the Ericksen Center against the #4 seed University of Minnesota Morris Cougars.
