Women’s Basketball Falls in Overtime to UW-Superior, Ending Undefeated Run Through UMAC in 12th Game

ST. PAUL, Minn. – University of Northwestern Women's Basketball hosted University of Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday evening in a conference contest. The Eagles, who clinched the UMAC Championship on Friday night, battled the Yellowjackets through regulation and into overtime, where Superior was able to take a 57-55 win to end the Eagles undefeated run through the conference at 11 games.

The Yellowjackets started the game on a 7-0 run and went up 11-2 midway through the first quarter. The Eagles then started to cut into Superior's lead, closing the gap to 14-7 by the end of the frame.

After a slow start, Northwestern started to pick up the pace. The Eagles got within three points of the Yellowjackets in the second quarter after Lexi Hagen (Jordan, Minn./Jordan) hit a jumper to set the score at 19-16. UWS was able to push their lead back up to six points as the two teams headed to halftime with the Yellowjackets leading 24-16.

After halftime, the Eagles started the third quarter on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 26-26. The Yellowjackets responded with an 8-2 run to close out the quarter, going up 34-28.

In the fourth quarter, the Eagles shooting caught fire as they shot 54.6 percent (6-for-11) from the field, were a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range, and made 6-of-8 at the line. In the midst of this offensive explosion, Northwestern retook the lead on a Megan McGeough (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) jumper with 4:16 remaining in the game, going up 41-40.

Superior would take the lead back and go up by four points with just 1:57 on the clock. Hagen proceeded to hit a three-point shot to bring UNW within one point, down 48-47. Northwestern would then make three free throws down the stretch to go up 50-48 with just 7.8 seconds remaining. The Yellowjackets then drove down the court and hit a tough jumper to tie the game with 1.1 seconds remaining, which effectively sent the game to overtime tied up at 50-50.

In that overtime period, the Yellowjackets went 3-of-4 from the floor with a three-pointer to take the game 57-55.

Points in the paint were a strength for the Eagles, outscoring the Yellowjackets 20-12. Superior had the advantage in points off of turnovers at 20-17.

Hagen led the Eagles with 15 points in the game. Jasmine Sondrol (Grand Forks, N.D./Red River) followed with 11 off the bench, going 3-for-5 from the floor, 1-for-1 from long range, and 4-for-4 at the line while adding six rebounds. McGeough had nine points and nine rebounds in the game, just missing a double-double. Taylor Schuck (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian Academy) had eight points and led the Eagles with five steals and three assists.

Up next, Northwestern will travel to take on the Bethany Lutheran College Vikings at 7:15 P.M. on Friday, February 17. UNW will then play their regular-season finale the next day at Martin Luther College.
