ST. PAUL, Minn.- The University of Northwestern Women's Soccer team returned to UMAC play on Thursday night as they hosted the Martin Luther College Knights. The Eagles defended their home field by defeating the Knights 5-0; picking up their second conference victory of the season.
The first twenty minutes of the contest went by scoreless before the Eagles broke the tie in the 22
nd minute.
Megan Kohrt (Monona, Wis./Homeschool) fired a shot that found the back of the net for her first goal of the season to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Less than ten minutes later, in the 30
th minute,
Mya Chan (Brandon, S.D./Homeschool) took a corner kick for UNW and sent a ball into the box that found
Haley Mersberger (Kiel, Wisc./Elkhart Lake Glenbeulah). Mersberger, the Eagles' leading scorer, fired a shot that was saved but she recovered her own rebound, fired another shot, and scored. The Eagles led 2-0.
That 2-0 score would hold all the way through halftime, but only five minutes into the second half,
Megan Moeller (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Christian School) scored her fifth goal of the season to put the Eagles up by three goals. Only 13 minutes after that, Mersberger would strike again. The freshman would score her 7
th goal of the season and her second of the day in the 64
th minute to put the Eagles up 4-0.
Abby Petersen (Fridley, Minn./Fridley) would find a way to knock in a bouncing ball in the box for the first goal of her career in the 89
th minute, and the Eagles won 5-0.
The Eagles team statistics in this contest were as impressive as it gets both offensively and defensively. UNW fired off a remarkable 50 shots in the contest with 32 of those landing on goal. The Eagles' defense all got the job done only allowing one shot in the contest. The Eagles' attack generated 10 corner kicks while their defensive unit did not surrender a corner kick opportunity in the contest.
Megan Moeller (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Christian School) tied the school record for shots in a game by firing off 17 in the contest. Moeller tied Nicole Seviola who recorded 17 shots in a game against North Central in 2006.
The Eagles are next in action on Saturday, October 1
st when they host Bethany Lutheran at Reynolds Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 P.M.
