ST. PAUL, Minn. – University of Northwestern Football took on Hope College on Saturday for their Homecoming game. The Eagles scored a late touchdown, but fell to the Flying Dutchmen 56-7.
Hope, whose only loss this season is to a Mount St. Joseph team that's receiving votes in the national polls, scored on each of their drives. The ground game was key for the Flying Dutchmen as they ran for 227 yards on 43 carries, averaging 6.4 per attempt.
Bryson James (Apopka, Fla./Central Florida Christian Academy) scored a touchdown for the Eagles in the fourth quarter. The freshman went up and won a jumpball in the back corner of the end zone to put Northwestern on the board.
Caden Cantrell (Taylor, Ariz./Snowflake) led the Eagle offense at quarterback. The freshman, making his first home start with a sold out crowd of UNW Nation faithful in attendance, completed 21 of 30 for 198 yards with a touchdown pass to James.
Damon Clapper (Dallas Center, Iowa/Dallas Center - Grimes) and
Beau Burk (Ogilvie, Minn./Ogilvie) both led the Eagles with six receptions each for 78 and 71 yards respectively.
Tyshawn Campbell (Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven) led the Eagle defense with 14 total tackles on the day, recording eight solo and six assisted.
Luke Nienow (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) had a tackle for loss to go with five total tackles.
Up next for the Eagles is the start of their conference season as the Eagles travel to Finlandia to take on the Lions on Saturday, October 1, at 1:00 P.M. local time in Hancock, Michigan.
