Football Falls to Falcons on the Road

MEQUON, Wis. – University of Northwestern Football traveled to Concordia Wisconsin to take on the Falcons in the Eagles' first road game of the season. UNW led in the second half, but CUW rallied to take a 28-14 win.

The Falcons struck first halfway into the opening quarter. CUW brought a blitz that made it home in time to affect the pass as it was being delivered, causing the ball to float short and be picked off. After a 36-yard return, Concordia punched it in from the five-yard line to take a 7-0 lead.

The Eagles answered midway through the second as Damon Clapper (Dallas Center, Iowa/Dallas Center - Grimes) hauled in a pass from Caden Cantrell (Taylor, Ariz./Snowflake) and fought his way through Falcons defenders to break the plane of the goal line. The 25-yard touchdown reception evened the score at 7-7.

Northwestern took a lead five minutes into the third quarter. Starting at the 50, the Eagles strung together a nine-play scoring drive, capped off by a one-yard quarterback sneak into the end zone by Cantrell to put UNW up 14-7.

Concordia and Northwestern exchanged turnovers on their ensuing drives, with CUW taking advantage of the second chance and scoring a 17-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game 14-14.

The Falcons scored twice more in the fourth quarter, first with a three-yard rushing touchdown and then with a 61-yard touchdown pass.

Up 28-14, CUW started a drive with 9:25 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Falcons methodically drove down the field with running plays to kill the clock. Concordia took eight minutes and 51 seconds off the clock on the 14-play, 61-yard drive to effectively ice the game.

Cantrell led the Eagles at quarterback, completing 19 of 27 for 204 yards and two total touchdowns. Jeremiah Staten (South Elgin, Ill./Wheaton Academy) led the Eagles on the ground with 17 attempts for 70 yards. Clapper was the main threat through the air, recording nine receptions for 83 yards and a touchdown.

On defense, Brad Kulinski (Milwaukee, Wis./Martin Luther) led the Eagles with seven total tackles and a forced fumble. Elijah Simmons (Kissimmee, Fla./Gateway High) recovered the fumble for UNW and added five tackles and an interception for Northwestern. Luke Malamisuro (Cambridge Isanti, Minn./Cambridge Isanti) also had an interception for UNW to go along with four tackles.

Up next for the Eagles is another road game, this time at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. The Eagles will battle the UWRF Falcons on Saturday, September 17, at 6:00pm.
