Box Score MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team battled the Martin Luther College Knights in the UMAC Tournament Semifinals on Friday evening. The #1 seeded Eagles took down the #4 Knights 5-0 to advance to the tournament championship game on Saturday. The semifinal victory also extended UNW's win streak to 19 matches in-a-row.
In doubles,
Elli Dodge (Wahpeton, N.D./Wahpeton) and
Taylar Smith (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) earned the first point for Northwestern with an 8-1 win in the #2 match.
Belinda Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) and
Annie Orvis (Rochester, Minn/Schaeffer Academy) followed with an 8-2 win at #1 doubles.
Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) and
Analise Marquardt (Parkers Prairie, Minn./Parkers Prairie) closed out a doubles sweep for UNW with an 8-4 win.
Up 3-0, the Eagles entered singles needing only two more wins to clinch the match. Smith earned the fourth team point for Northwestern with a 6-0, 6-1 win at #3 singles. Weddle followed with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #1 singles to clinch the semifinal match 5-0. In the UMAC Tournament, all unfinished play is halted once a team wins the decisive fifth point to clinch the match.
With the win, Northwestern advances to the UMAC Tournament Championship game scheduled for Saturday, May 7, starting at 1:00 P.M. The Eagles will take on the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets in a battle for the tournament title and a ticket to the NCAA Tournament.
