WHITEWATER, Wis. – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team traveled to the UW-Whitewater Regional and battled the Grinnell College Pioneers on Thursday in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Championship. The Eagles fell 5-0 to the #35 nationally ranked and #6 regionally ranked Pioneers, bringing UNW's incredible 20-match winning streak to a close.
In doubles, the Pioneers took the #1 match 8-1 to go up 1-0. Grinnell followed with an 8-2 win at #3 doubles. The Pioneers closed out the doubles matches with an 8-3 win at #2.
In singles, the Eagles fell in the #1 match to #12 nationally ranked and #3 regionally ranked Sabrina Tang 6-0, 6-0. #4 singles went to the Pioneers in a 6-0, 6-0 final. With those two points, Grinnell reached five points to end the match 5-0.
Northwestern finished the 2022 season 21-4 overall with a perfect 8-0 record against conference opponents. The Eagles earned all but the first of their wins during a 20-match winning streak that lasted nearly the whole season. UNW won the UMAC Season Championship for the second consecutive year and fifth time in program history. The Eagles then won the UMAC Tournament title, likewise for the second year in a row and fifth time overall. With seven of the 10 student-athletes being freshman this year, the future is very bright for this Eagles squad.
