URBANDALE, Iowa – The UNW Men's Tennis team traveled south to take on the Simpson College Storm in Iowa on Tuesday. The Eagles swept away the Storm in a 9-0 victory, improving their record to 11-3 on the season.
Northwestern cruised through doubles with the #1 duo of
Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) and
Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) leading the way with an 8-2 win in the top match.
Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) and
Jacob Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) gave up just a single game in an 8-1 win at #2 doubles.
Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) and
Darin Rupp (Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt) closed out the doubles competition with an 8-3 win in the #3 match.
Up 3-0 entering singles play, the Eagles didn't slow down in the slightest. Morrell swept the top match 6-0, 6-0 for a #1 singles win. Ryerse secured the team win for UNW with a 6-1, 6-1 win at #2 singles for the match clinching fifth point. Weddle took the #3 match 6-1, 6-2. Geurkink earned a 6-2, 6-4 win at #4 singles.
Isaac Velgersdyk (Savage, Minn./Southwest Christian) won his #5 match 6-0, 6-2. Studer closed out the sweep for UNW with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the #6 singles match.
Up next for Northwestern is a return home for a pair of conference matches on their home courts this Saturday starting at 1:00 P.M. against Minnesota Morris. At 6:00 P.M., the Eagles will take on the Bethany Lutheran Vikings in another UMAC contest on campus.
