Strong Second Half Powers Spartans Past Eagles

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's lacrosse team hosted the University of Dubuque Spartans Saturday afternoon. A strong offensive second half for the Spartans was too much for the Eagles as they fell 12-4.

It was a competitive first half as neither team found a goal in the first quarter of the game. Dubuque would find the first goal of the game as they quickly scored coming off of the second quarter faceoff. The Spartans got themselves into a man-up situation and would capitalize as they earned themselves a second goal to go up two. Lucas Peters (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln East) broke the scoring seal for Northwestern as he took it upon himself to cut the deficit in half. The Spartans found one more goal in the half as they took a 3-1 lead into halftime.

A much different Dubuque showed up in the second half as they showcased why they are one of the best in the Midwest Lacrosse Conference. After a very strong first half defensively for the Eagles, the Spartans started to find the net as they made three separate 3-0 runs in the second half. Duguque would close out the game and win 12-4.

Offensively, Peters would add a second goal while Bryce Schmidgall (Hancock, Minn./Hancock) and Sam Moses (Wasau, Wis./Wasau East) each found one of their own. Peters would also add an assist as he helped Schmidgall earn his goal.

In the contest, Jakob Montesi (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) set a new school record for most caused turnovers, as he, along with Joseph Kalski (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek), led the team in caused turnovers with three each. Montesi also led the team with five total ground balls on the day. In the net, Robert McHenry (Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) added eight more saves to his season total.

Next up for Northwestern is one final regular season and conference game as they will be hosting the Lake Forest College Foresters next Saturday, April 30, for senior day with start time slated for 1:00 p.m.
