Four Hat Tricks Leads Eagles Over Rams 12-7 in MWLC Opener

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The University of Northwestern Women's Lacrosse team hosted the Rams of Cornell College Saturday afternoon. The great passing of the Eagles led to many great scoring plays and a 12-7 victory for Northwestern, improving their record to 3-4 (1-0 MWLC) on the season.

Abby Scheel (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) got the scoring going for both teams as she slotted away her fourth goal of the season. Cornell quickly responded with two goals to take the lead away from Northwestern before Cara Smith (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) would score the final goal of the first quarter and make it 2-2.

The second quarter saw UNW come alive in the passing game as four of the five goals they scored came off an assist. It started with three straight goals for the Eagles. First was Scheel's second goal from Samantha Wiebold (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) before the two would switch positions on the stat column for the next goal as Wiebold scored her first goal of the game. Wiebold would follow it up with another goal from an Ava Whitcomb (Otsego, Minn./Rogers) pass. Whitcomb then found her own goal later in the second while Wiebold found her third for a hat trick in the quarter. Northwestern retained a 7-4 lead heading into halftime.

UNW continued to pile on the scoring as they outscored CC 4-2 in the third. Scheel added her third of the game for a hat trick while Smith added two more to her tally for her own hat trick. Meanwhile  Whitcomb added her second goal to give the Eagles an 11-6 lead entering the final 15 minutes. In the third, Wiebold added two assists while Emma Ruegemer (Cold Spring, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins) had one.

In the final quarter, both teams would exchange one goal a piece. Whitcomb found her third goal of the game for her hat trick off of a pass from Talia Gruthusen (Dryer, Ind./Lake Central). Northwestern closed out the game with a 12-7 victory.

Four Eagles scored all 12 goals as they each finished the game with a hat trick as Scheel, Smith, Whitcomb, and Wiebold all had three goals. As for the assist column there were six Northwestern players with an assist while Wiebold earned a hat trick in that column as well. In the goal, Brittany Clark (Shell Lake, Wis./) added two saves to her total on the season.

Up next for the Eagles is a quick trip down to Hamline University as the Eagles will face off against the Pipers on Wednesday, April 6 at 7:00 p.m.
