ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's lacrosse team battled Hamline University on Wednesday in a Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference contest. The Eagles fell 10-5 to the Pipers on a rainy night in the cities.
Hamline scored the opening goal of the game to take an early lead.
Samantha Wiebold (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) answered right back for the Eagles with her team-leading 20th goal of the season.
The Pipers responded with four consecutive goals to take a 5-1 lead.
Maddie Hauer (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) broke Hamline's run with a goal two-minutes into the second quarter.
Hamline would score twice more in the quarter but
Abby Scheel (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) scored the final goal of the half for Northwestern. The sophomore intercepted the Piper goalie on a clear attempt and then brought it right back to score the third goal for UNW.
In the second half, the Pipers added to their 7-3 lead with two more goals. Though they trailed, the Eagles weren't done yet.
Cara Smith (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) scored on an extra player opportunity to set the score at 9-4. Hamline would score once more, but once more UNW would answer as Smith scored her second of the game, assisted by Scheel.
The game was called with 10:06 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Next up for the Eagles is another conference game, this time at home against Lake Forest at 5:00 P.M. this Friday, April 8.
