ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team battled the Trine University Thunder and the King's College Monarchs on Monday. The Eagles fell to the Thunder in the final moments of a hard-fought 5-4 match. UNW's match against the Monarchs was rained out with Northwestern up 3-0.
Match One
In doubles against Trine, the Eagles took two of three. The Thunder jumped ahead 1-0 with an 8-1 win at the #1 match.
Taylar Smith (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) and
Elli Dodge (Wahpeton, N.D./Wahpeton) answered with an 8-5 win at #2 Doubles to even the score. Northwestern took the 2-1 lead with an 8-4 win by
Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) and
Analise Marquardt (Parkers Prairie, Minn./Parkers Prairie) at #3 Doubles.
In singles, the Thunder roared back, taking the #1 match 6-1, 6-0 and the #4 match 6-0, 6-0 to take a 3-2 lead. The Eagles countered with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #5 Singles by Jarchow to tie the match at 3-3.
UNW took a 4-3 lead as Marquardt rallied to win her #6 match 3-6, 6-0, (10-3) to bring the Eagles within one point of victory. Trine, however, fought back with a win at #3 Singles to even the score at 4-4.
With a winner-take-all match going on at #2 Singles, the Thunder managed to break through in a tiebreaker to win 6-4, 2-6, (10-6) and take the match 5-4.
Match Two
The Eagles led 3-0 in their match against the Monarchs before rain fall forced match play to stop. The teams are working to find a schedule opening to finish the match before their trip to Florida ends.
