Men’s Tennis Earns 9-0 Road Win Over Cobbers

FARGO, N.D. – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team traveled up to Fargo on Saturday to take on Concordia College Moorhead. The Eagles were firing on all cylinders and soared to a 9-0 sweep over the Cobbers.
 
UNW opened the match with a 3-0 sweep of the doubles matches. Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) and Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) cruised to an 8-1 win in the #1 match. Darin Rupp (Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt) and Collin Hemann (Newton, Iowa/Newton) wrapped up their #3 match next with an 8-2 win. Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) and Jacob Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) took an 8-2 win in the #2 match to close out the doubles competition.
 
In singles, the Eagles kept the peddle to the metal. Ryerse earned the fourth point for UNW with a 6-0, 6-2 win at #2 singles. Weddle clinched the team victory for Northwestern with a 6-1, 6-3 win in the #3 singles match for the decisive fifth point.
 
With the match in hand, UNW closed out the match with four more wins. Morrell had the greatest challenge of the day at #1 singles, but fought his way to a 7-5, 7-5 victory. Guerkink followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win at #4 singles. Isaac Velgersdyk (Savage, Minn./Southwest Christian) and Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) completed the 9-0 team sweep for the Eagles with 6-2, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-1 wins at #5 and #6 singles, respectively.
 
Up next for Northwestern is a return to their home courts for the first time this year, weather permitting. The Eagles are scheduled to take on the University of Dubuque Spartans at 9:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 2, before traveling to Mankato that same day to take on the Bethany Lutheran College Vikings at 4:00 P.M. that evening.
