GEORGETOWN, Texas. – The University of Northwestern women's lacrosse team opened their 2022 campaign on Thursday in Texas against the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears. The Eagles scored thrice but fell 20-3.
Grace Teal (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) scored the first goal of the season for UNW with an unassisted shot in the sixth minute of the opening quarter.
The duo of
Ava Whitcomb (Otsego, Minn./Rogers) and
Cara Smith (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) combined to score the final two goals of the game. Smith assisted Whitcomb on a goal with three minutes remaining in the game, and then Whitcomb returned the favor by assisting Smith with a goal in the final minute of the contest.
Talia Gruthusen (Dryer, Ind./Lake Central) led the Eagles with three caused turnovers in the game. Smith picked up a team-high two groundballs for UNW.
Brittany Clark (Shell Lake, Wis./) had eight saves in goal for Northwestern.
Up next for the Eagles is another match in Texas as Northwestern takes on Southwestern starting at 12:00 P.M. on Saturday.
