HANCOCK, Mich. – University of Northwestern Men's Basketball battled Finlandia University on the road on Saturday evening in what would be the highest-scoring game for UNW in 30 seasons. The Eagles had one of the most prolific scoring nights in program history, defeating the Lions 117-72 for a non-conference victory.
The last time the Eagles scored as many points as they did on Saturday was against Crown during the 1991-92 season in a 117-64 victory, tying that team for the fourth-most points scored in a game in program history.
Northwesern has scored 118 points in a game twice: most recently in a 118-66 win over Miami Christian during the 1980-81 season, and earlier in a 118-99 win over Maranatha Baptist during the 1977-78 season.
The record for the most points scored in a game in UNW Men's Basketball history was set during the 1975-76 season. That year, the Eagles took a 126-57 victory over Viterbo; a scoring record that still stands to this day 47-years later.
Northwestern earned their historic win over Finlandia on Saturday with by making 42-of-77 from the field for a 54.5 shooting percentage. The Eagles' three-point shooting was key to their big night, making 16-fof-28 for a 57.1 percent clip from beyond the arc. The final piece was UNW's free-throw shooting, making 17-of-21 for an 81.0 percent mark from the charity stripe.
Henry Fahnbulleh (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) led the way for the Eagles, scoring a team-high 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting in just 22 minutes of action, just missing out on a double-double with nine total rebounds.
Micah Pocernich (Cromwell, Minn./Cromwell-Wright) followed with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting, splashing all three shots taken from three-point range.
Kyle Kaemingk (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) had a 12-point, 10-rebound night for a double-double.
Seth Fuqua (Colorado Springs, Colo./The Vanguard School) followed up Friday's 26-point game with 11 and added seven rebounds on defense.
In total, 14 Eagles scored in the historic win.
Up next, Northwestern will return home to face Crown College on Friday, December 9, at 5:30 P.M. in the Ericksen Center for their first conference contest of the season.
