Kaemingk Surpasses 1,000 Career Points as Men’s Basketball Wins Season Opener 89-66 over Pipers

ST. PAUL, Minn. – University of Northwestern Men's Basketball opened their 2022-23 campaign on the road Tuesday night with a non-conference contest at Hamline University. The Eagles took an 18-point lead by halftime and soared to an 89-66 win over the Pipers.

Hamline scored a three-pointer to open the game. It would be their only lead of the night as Northwestern answered with an eight-point run to go up 8-3 and never looked back. The Eagles led by as many as 20 in the opening half. In the second, Northwestern's lead peaked at 29 points three different times.

Kyle Kaemingk (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) led the way for UNW with 24 points on 9-for-19 shooting from the field. The senior surpassed a major career milestone in the win as he reached 1,000 career points scored. The forward added eight rebounds, three assists, and a steal in the win.

Caleb Hoilien (Minneapolis, Minn./Hope Academy) scored 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting. The junior added nine rebounds and two assists.

Henry Fahnbulleh (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) earned a double-double with 14 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. The junior also led the Eagles in assists with four.

Seth Fuqua (Colorado Springs, Colo./The Vanguard School) was the fourth Eagle to reach double-digit points, scoring 12. The senior shot 4-for-5 from three-point range. He added three rebounds and three assists.

As a team, the Eagles shot 44.4 percent from the floor and 40.7 percent from three. UNW's defense held Hamline to 34.8 percent shooting and 36.7 percent from beyond the arc.

Second-chance points were key in the contest as Northwestern scored 26 while holding Hamline to just three. UNW also outscored the Pipers in the paint, 36-20.

Up next, Northwestern will host Bethel University for a 4:00 P.M. contest in the Ericksen Center on Sunday, November 13. The game will be the first between the cross-town rival programs in nearly seven years. The last game between the Eagles and Royals was December 1, 2015.
