Haakenson Places Sixth Overall as Eagles Finish UMAC Women’s Golf Championship as Runners-Up by Two Strokes

BECKER, Minn. – University of Northwestern Women's Golf competed in the third and final day of the 2022 UMAC Championship on Saturday. Trailing first place University of Minnesota Morris by two strokes entering the day, the Eagles matched the Cougars score of 371 (+83) on Saturday to finished the championship as runners-up.
 
Final Results
 
Northwestern finished the three-day championship with a 1099 (+235). Minnesota Morris won the championship by two strokes with a 1097 (+233). Crown College finished 66 strokes behind the Eagles in third-place, shooting a 1165 (+301).
 
Maddy Bloedel of Northland earned medalist honors by leading the field of 37 golfers with a 258 (+42) in the championship.
 
Claire Haakenson (Albertville, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) led the Eagles in the championship with a 272 (+56) to place sixth overall. The sophomore shot a 91 (+19) in the third round.
 
Kirsten Darling (Coon Rapids, Minn./Legacy Christian Academy) placed seventh overall with a 275 (+59), having climbed up from a 97 (+25) on day one to shoot an 88 (+16) on Saturday. The junior's day three round was the lowest single-round of any Eagle in the championship.
 
Kelly Van Den Bussche (Princeton, Ill./Princeton) took eighth overall with a 276 (+60) in the championship. The junior shot a 94 (+22) on the third day.
 
Mattie Krause (Clear Lake, Iowa/Clear Lake) rounded out the counted Eagle scores as the senior shot a 98 (+26) on Saturday to finish with a 277 (+61) in ninth place overall.
 
Samantha Burkhart (Salix, Iowa/Westwood) finished 14th with a 296 (+80) after shooting a 99 (+27) on the final day.
 
 
Day Two Recap
 
University of Northwestern Women's Golf competed in the second round of the three-day 2022 UMAC Championship on Friday. Entering the day tied in first place with Minnesota Morris, the Eagles shot six strokes better (361, +73) than their first round but fell behind the Cougars by two strokes in the overall standings. UNW stands in second place with a 728 (+152) through two days, leading third place Crown College (781, +205) by 53 strokes.
  
Mattie Krause (Clear Lake, Iowa/Clear Lake) (Clear Lake, Iowa/Clear Lake) led the Eagles once again on Friday as the senior shot a team-low 89 (+17). Krause's score improved her overall placement, moving her into a tie for third place with a score of 179 (+35) through two rounds of the championship.
 
Claire Haakenson (Albertville, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) (Albertville, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) shot a 90 (+18) to hold her position of sixth overall. The sophomore has a 181 (+37) through two days.
 
Kelly Van Den Bussche (Princeton, Ill./Princeton) (Princeton, Ill./Princeton) shot a 92 (+20) to move into a tie for seventh place overall. The junior has a 182 (+38) after Friday.
 
Kirsten Darling (Coon Rapids, Minn./Legacy Christian Academy) (Coon Rapids, Minn./Legacy Christian Academy) bounced back from round one by improving her score by seven strokes in round two; recording a 90 (+18) for the Eagles. The junior moved up to 10th overall with a 1187 (+43) in the championship thus far.
 
Samantha Burkhart (Salix, Iowa/Westwood) (Salix, Iowa/Westwood) shot a 101 (+29) for the Eagles, moving into a tie for 13th overall. The senior has a 197 (+53) going into the final day of the championship.
 
 
Day One Recap
 
University of Northwestern Women's Golf competed in the opening round of the 2022 UMAC Championship on Thursday. The Eagles finished the day tied for first place with the University of Minnesota Morris after shooting a 367 (+79). Crown College holds third place 25 strokes behind the Eagles and Cougars after recording a 392 (+104) on the day. Maddy Bloedel of Northland currently holds the top stop overall, shooting an 84 (+12) in the opening round.
 
Mattie Krause (Clear Lake, Iowa/Clear Lake) (Clear Lake, Iowa/Clear Lake) and Kelly Van Den Bussche (Princeton, Ill./Princeton) (Princeton, Ill./Princeton) both tied for fourth place overall, leading the Eagles with a 90 (+18) in the first round.
 
Claire Haakenson (Albertville, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) (Albertville, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) finished just one stroke behind the lead UNW duo, shooting a 91 (+19) to tie for sixth overall on day one.
 
Samantha Burkhart (Salix, Iowa/Westwood) (Salix, Iowa/Westwood) recorded the final counted UNW score of the first round, shooting a 96 (+24) to place 11th overall.
 
Kirsten Darling (Coon Rapids, Minn./Legacy Christian Academy) (Coon Rapids, Minn./Legacy Christian Academy) tied for 12th overall on day one, shooting a 97 (+25).
