Chan Scores as Eagles Fall to Yellowjackets

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The University of Northwestern Women's Soccer team played their final game at Reynolds Field for the 2022 regular season on Saturday when they hosted the Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets. The Yellowjackets entered the game needing to win to lock up the UMAC Regular Season Championship and they would clinch the title by defeating the Eagles 4-1.

The first half was extremely tight as the two teams delivered blows and continued to respond to each other. In the first 15 minutes of the game, the two teams took turns getting good scoring opportunities but neither could beat the goaltenders. In the 17th minute, it was the Yellowjackets who would break through and take the 1-0 lead.

In the 33rd minute, the Eagles finally cashed in on all of their scoring opportunities. UNW set up in the offensive zone and displayed good ball movement. The ball would find Megan Corbett who found Mya Chan (Brandon, S.D./Homeschool) in open space and passed her the ball. Chan fired the shot past the keeper for her 3rd goal of the season and the game was tied 1-1.

In the 42nd minute, it was the Yellowjackets' turn to respond. Both teams were generating scoring chances as each side was trying to get into the halftime break without surrendering another goal. It was Superior that was able to find that elusive second goal right before the half to take a 2-1 lead. The Eagles would keep firing shots looking for that first half equalizer, but the Yellowjackets' defense held up, including a shot off of a corner kick opportunity where the ball was headed to the back of the net but a Superior defender knocked it out on the back line. The Eagles trailed 2-1 at the half. Superior would add two goals in the second half to win the game 4-1.

Delaynee Bohatta (Hammond, WI/St. Croix Central) made two saves in net for the Eagles and Megan Kohrt (Monona, Wis./Homeschool) led the team with three shots in the game. Haley Mersberger (Kiel, Wisc./Elkhart Lake Glenbeulah) and Megan Moeller (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Christian School) had two shots apiece.

The Eagles have two regular season games left in the 2022 season including an important matchup with Bethany Lutheran on Wednesday, October 26th at 7:30 P.M.
