SUPERIOR, Wis. – No. 5 University of Northwestern Volleyball took on University of Wisconsin-Superior in a conference matchup on the road on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles swept the Yellowjackets 3-0 to improve to 25-2 overall and remain undefeated against UMAC opponents this season. Beyond undefeated, UNW has not dropped even a set against a conference opponent this season, winning all 11 matches by 3-0 sweep.
The Eagles battled to a five-point lead in the opening set up 17-12. The Yellowjackets won the next point to get within four, but Northwestern proceeded to go on a dominant eight-point run to take set one 25-13.
UW-Superior kept better pace with the high-flying Eagles in set two. The Yellowjackets led 8-7 early in the set, but UNW won the next three to go up by two. UWS climbed back within one down 15-16 and then 16-17, but UNW went on a four-point run to extend their lead en route to a 25-19 set win.
In the third set, the two teams battled to a photo finish. At no point in the set did either team lead by more than two points. The neck-and-neck race to 25 saw UNW go up 23-22. The Yellowjackets proceeded to win the next two points to go up 24-23 for set point. The Eagles got a vital kill from
Abby Glanzer (Brandon, S.D./Sioux Falls Christian) to even the score and extent the race to 26. UWS got one more kill to go up 25-24 for their second set point. Once again, Glanzer fired a critical kill for Northwestern to even the score. Glanzer landed another kill in the next point to reach match point for UNW up 26-25.
Ari Schmidt (Albany, Minn./Holdingford) landed one final kill to push the Eagles ahead 27-25 to take the set and the match.
Kendra Hardy (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria) led the offensive attack for UNW with 13 kills and a fantastic .522 hitting percentage. Schmidt and Glanzer each had double-digit kills as well for Northwestern, landing 12 and 11 respectively.
Felicia Luther (Victoria, Minn./Southwest Christian) had a team-high 22 assists with
Grace Strickfaden (Norwood-Young America, Minn./NYA) following with 19.
Kiera Brown (Columbia Falls, Mont./Columbia Falls) led the defensive front with four total blocks.
Marylyn Schroyer (Ft. Collins, Colo./Ft. Collins) protected the back court with a team-high 18 digs.
UNW hit .258 in the match while holding UWS to a .113 percentage. The two teams had seven blocks and an ace apiece, but the Eagles' 48 kills gave them the edge over the 37 the Yellowjackets hit.
Up next, No. 5 Northwestern travels over to the Crown College on Tuesday for their final road match of the regular season. The Eagles will then return home on Friday for a match against Bethany Lutheran while hosting both their VIP Night and Faculty Appreciation Night. On Saturday, UNW closes out their regular season with a Senior Day match at home against Martin Luther College.
