WINONA, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team opened their season with a win on Friday night. The Eagles traveled to take on St. Mary's University and defeated the Cardinals in a 6-3 victory.
UNW started the match with a sweep of the doubles competition. The duo of
Isaac Velgersdyk (Savage, Minn./Southwest Christian) and
Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead with an 8-2 win at #3 Doubles.
Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) and
Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) followed with an 8-7 win at the #1 match.
Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) and
Jacob Weddle () completed the doubles sweep with an 8-7 win at the #2 match.
Northwestern entered the singles competition needing just two wins in singles to take the match after a perfect 3-0 run through doubles. UNW jumped ahead 4-0 after Morrell won his #1 Singles match 6-1, 6-1. The Eagles proceeded to secure the match win right afterwards as Studer won his #6 Singles match 7-5, 6-4 to earn the decisive fifth point for Northwestern up 5-0.
Weddle added a sixth point for UNW as the freshman won his first collegiate match 6-3, 6-4 at the #4 spot.
Next up for Northwestern is another road match on Friday, February 18, at Concordia Moorhead starting at 5:30pm.
