SAN ANTONIO, Texas. – The No. 18 nationally ranked University of Northwestern volleyball team closed their weekend competition in the Trinity Tournament with a big 3-1 win over California Lutheran University on Saturday afternoon.
The first and second sets were split between the Regals and Eagles, with CLU winning the opener 26-24 and UNW answering with a 26-24 victory of their own in the second. The flow of the match completely changed, however, in the final two sets when Northwestern found a spark and caught fire. The Eagles won the final two sets in dominant fashion, taking the third 25-9 before sealing the match victory in a 25-10 fourth.
Abby Glanzer (Brandon, S.D./Sioux Falls Christian) led the offensive barrage for the Eagles with 24 kills (6.0 per set) on an incredible .537 hitting percentage.
Kendra Hardy (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria) made noise on the opposite side as well for Northwestern, hitting .429 for 13 kills. As a team, UNW hit .322 in the match.
Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACCRAY) set the Eagles up for the win with an outstanding 52 assists for an average of 13 per set. The senior also led UNW with 17 digs in the match.
Kiera Brown (Columbia Falls, Mont./Columbia Falls) led Northwestern's defensive front with three block assists and a solo block, and added six kills offensively. UNW's defense held the Regals to a .145 hitting percentage.
After the final match, both Glanzer and Schwitters were recognized for their incredible tournament performances with All-Tournament honors.
Next up for the Eagles is the start of conference play, as Northwestern returns home to face the University of Minnesota Morris Cougars on Saturday, September 25, at 1:00 p.m. in a rematch of this past spring's UMAC Tournament Championship game. After that match, the Eagles will face the North Central University Rams at 4:30 p.m. in another home conference contest that Saturday.
