Currie and Moeller Score Twice Each, Eagles Win UMAC Opener Against North Central

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.- UNW Women's Soccer made the short trip to downtown Minneapolis to open up UMAC play against a familiar foe, North Central, on Saturday night. The Eagles made a statement, starting conference play 1-0 with a convincing victory over the Rams, 6-1.

It did not take long for the visitors to light up the scoreboard as the Eagles scored early and often as they took control of the game from the opening kickoff. In the fourth minute, senior Emily Currie (Minneapolis, Minn./Home School) notched her first goal of the young season, as she tucked in a beautiful free kick just over the goalie's outstretched arm and just under the crossbar. Currie's goal opened up the scoring in Minneapolis, but it would not be the last time Currie would make an impact in the game.

The Eagles kept the pressure on and set the tone with aggressive offensive play early in the first half. In the tenth minute, it was sophomore Kaylin Strike (Hanover, Minn./Buffalo) who scored her first goal of the season to give the Eagles a commanding 2-0 lead in the first ten minutes of play. In the 32nd minute, it was Megan Moeller's (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Christian School) turn. The sophomore, who was the only Eagle with a goal on the season coming into the game, made her presence felt when she knocked in a goal. Similar to Currie, we would hear Moeller's name again later in the match. The goal gave the Eagles a comfortable 3-0 lead going into the halftime break.

The second half started the same way the first half started as the Eagle continued to apply the pressure offensively. It was Emily Currie (Minneapolis, Minn./Home School) again who opened up the scoring, as she buried her second goal of the evening. On the goal, Currie was assisted by RJ Mullin (Temecula, Calif./Rancho Christian) as the seniors connected for the goal. Five minutes later, in the 56th minute, the Rams got on the board as an Alexis Orlando goal made it a 4-1 Eagle lead.

However, responding nicely to the Rams' goal, UNW took control of the game once again. It was Megan Moeller (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Christian School) who scored again for Northwestern in the 59th minute for her second goal of the game, this time the assist was credited to Megan Kohrt (Monona, Wis./Homeschool). Emma Wheeler (Elgin, Minn./Pem) would then assist on an Abby Peterson goal in the 90th minute, and the Eagles would win 6-1.

It was a dominating performance by the Eagles, as they outshot the Rams 47-7. 26 of those shots on the Northwestern side were on goal.

After this offensive outburst, the Eagles will look to continue this positive momentum as they play their final nonconference game of the season against Hamline on Wednesday, September 22nd at Reynolds Field.
