Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | David Pederson

Defense was the Story as the Eagles Drop the Final Nonconference Game Against Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The UNW Women's Soccer team closed out their nonconference schedule with a home match against Hamline on a beautiful Wednesday night at Reynolds Field. The Eagles fell to the Pipers 2-0 in a game that was tightly contested throughout.

The Pipers came out with an aggressive, offensive mindset and controlled possession in the early stages of the match. Anna Browne scored an impressive goal from about 25 yards out in the 12th minute to open the scoring, and the Pipers continued to capitalize on that momentum with a goal in the 19th minute by Ku Gay Tha. After the early scoring, defense became the story for both teams.

The teams entered the halftime break with the Pipers leading 2-0. The Pipers outshot the Eagles 7-3 in the first half. Things would more evenly matched during the second half.

In the second half, shots were extremely hard to come by. The shot total would be tied 3-3 during the second half, and no goals would be scored. Both back lines were phenomenal, and did not allow the offenses from either team to get into a rhythm in the second half. The game would end 2-0 as the game was defined by tough defense and physical play throughout.

Ellie Fryer (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) was solid in net, finishing with four saves for the Eagles. On the offensive side of the ball, Megan Moeller (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Christian School) had two shots, and Mya Chan (Brandon, S.D./Homeschool), Amanda Kocurek (North Branch, Minn./North Branch), Emily Currie (Minneapolis, Minn./Home School), and Megan Kohrt (Monona, Wis./Homeschool) had one a piece.

The Eagles will not have a lot of time to recover from tonight's contest, as they are back in action on Friday, September 24th on the road against Crown College. Every game the Eagles will play for the remainder of the 2021 regular season will be a conference game.
