ST. PAUL, Minn.- It was an exciting night as the UNW Women's Soccer team opened up Reynolds Field for the 2021 fall season with a matchup against Bethel University. The Eagles fell to the Royals by a score of 2-1 in the nonconference game to fall to 0-1 on the season.
This proved to be an excellent matchup right from the opening kickoff. Defense prevailed in the first half, as both squads were looking for the first goal of their season. Bethel had possession for the majority of the first half, totaling eleven shots to Northwestern's one. However, the Eagles defense held strong thanks in large part to
Ellie Fryer's (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) play in goal. The two teams went in to the halftime break locked in a 0-0 tie.
The Royals came out of the break and immediately had an answer for the Eagles suffocating defense. It was Lauren Davis who finally opened up the scoring in the 54
th minute to give the Royals the lead. Bethel was very opportunistic, as they seized that momentum and scored again two minutes later to open up a 2-0 advantage.
However, the Eagles did not go away.
Ellie Fryer (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) was excellent in net as she made impressive saves on dangerous scoring opportunities to keep the deficit at two. It was in the 77
th minute that sophomore
Megan Moeller (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Christian School) delivered the highlight of the night. Junior
Hannah Lageson (St. Paul, Minn./Concordia Academy) led Moeller towards the goal with a beautiful feed, and it was a dazzling goal from the sophomore from an impossible angle that brought the Eagles back within one.
Northwestern had some scoring opportunities in the final minutes of the game, but were unable to find the equalizer.
Northwestern managed four shots on goal, three of those chances were generated by Moeller. Fryer was phenomenal in net, facing eleven shots on goal and making nine saves.
The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, September 4
th as they hit the road for the first time in 2021 travelling to Minneapolis to face off against Augsburg College in a nonconference matchup.
