DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team traveled to St. Scholastica to start their spring UMAC conference season on Saturday. Due to Covid-19, all fall sports had their conference seasons pushed to the spring 2021, with no NCAA Tournament. Although the Eagles had a seven game fall season already played, they were unable to defeat the Saints, losing 3-0.
Northwestern was the only conference team to have any type of game schedule in the normal fall season for women's soccer. They competed in seven games, ending 4-3. After today's loss, the Eagles sit .500 overall and fall to 0-1 in UMAC play.
UNW came ready to play and thankful for the chance to compete amidst an irregular year in the least. The Eagles found themselves on their heels as Scholastica scored in the second minute of play. Down early, Northwestern continued to battle and play tough defense.
In the fourteenth minute of play,
Hannah Walmsley (Lino Lakes, Minn./Homeschool) played a ball out front for
Danielle Roberts (Hastings, Minn./Hastings) to run onto and take an open look on net, but was unable to find the back of the net.
The Saints were able to take six shots on goal all half in which goalie,
Ellie Fryer (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) made four saves. In the thirty-first minute, CSS found the back of the net after a few messy plays in the Eagles box.
At the end of the first half, UNW was down 2-0 to the Saints and were outshot 13-2.
Second half of play began on the sunny afternoon in Duluth with a shot by Scholastica. CSS tallied their third and final goal 13 minutes into the second half.
Thirty minutes into the second, a foul in the Saints box brought a penalty kick for the Eagles that was blocked to keep Northwestern scoreless.
Goalie
Ellie Fryer (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) finished the game with eight saves. The Eagles finished with six shots, two shots-on-goal.
UNW is back in action on Wednesday as they travel to Minnesota Morris for a 1 pm kickoff.
