Women’s Lacrosse Takes Down Duhawks on Senior Day

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern St. Paul Women's Lacrosse team took on the Loras College Duhawks on Friday afternoon in a rainy MWLC matchup. The Eagles powered their way to a 19-6 win to pass the Duhawks in the MWLC standings to take sole possession of third place in the conference.

Abby Scheel (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) scored a pair of unassisted goals 17 seconds apart early in the day to put UNW up 2-0. The Duhawks and Eagles proceeded to trade goals for the next 10 minutes with UNW holding a 5-4 lead.

With seven minutes remaining in the first half, Talia Sherry (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) scored her second of the day to start a four goal run by the Eagles as Northwestern took a 9-4 lead. Loras managed to score with 27:45 remaining in the second half to break the streak, but Cara Smith (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) scored two minutes later to start a run of nine Northwestern goals in a row to go up 18-5.

The Eagles and Duhawks traded one more goal each as Northwestern won 19-6 to improve to 4-2 in conference play on the season and 5-3 overall.

Sherry led UNW with 11 points on seven goals and four assists. The senior also won 10 draw controls and grabbed nine ground balls in the win.

Samantha Wiebold (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) was second on the Eagles with five points on four goals and an assist. Scheel and Maddie Nimmo (Somerset, Wis./Hill-Murray) each recorded hat tricks, with Scheel leading the Eagles with 12 ground balls. Smith finished the game with two goals and an assist with five draw control wins.

Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) saved 14 shots on goal to improve to 5-2 in net this season.

The Eagles celebrated senior day before the match, taking time to highlight seniors Roberts, Sherry, Jamie Ellis (Farmington, Minn./Homeschool), and Grace Langmade (Pine City, Minn./Pine City).

Up next for Northwestern is an away game at the University of Wisconsin River Falls on Saturday, April 24, at 6pm.
