WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. - The University of Northwestern St. Paul Men's Tennis team extended their program single season wins record on Friday night, improving to 17-2 with a 9-0 sweep of the Martin Luther College Knights.
UNW started strong in doubles. Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) and Isaac Velgersdyk (Savage, Minn./Southwest Christian) cruised to an 8-2 win at the #2 match. Davis Pfaff (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and Matthew Wedin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) followed with an 8-7 win at the #1 match. Zachary Revenig (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) and Collin Hemann (Newton, Iowa/Newton) completed a doubles sweep with an 8-6 win at the #3 spot.
Pfaff earned the first singles point for UNW with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the #1 match. Ryerse earned the match winning fifth point with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the #3 match.
Win in hand, Northwestern took the remaining matches for the sweep. Wedin won the #2 match 6-1, 6-2. Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) swept the #4 match 6-0, 6-0. Caleb Quernmoen (Becker, Minn./Becker) likewise swept his #6 match 6-0, 6-0. Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) closed out the night with a 6-3, 6-4 win at #5 singles.
Up next for Northwestern is a conference match with St. Scholastica. The Eagles travel to face the Saints on Saturday, April 24, at 4pm.
