Men’s Tennis Stays Unbeaten at 12-0 as Geurkink Secures 5-4 Win over Cardinals

WINONA, Minn. - The University of Northwestern St. Paul Men's Tennis team kept their perfect season alive with a gutsy 5-4 win over Saint Mary's University on Friday. Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) earned the game winner at #5 Singles to break a 4-4 tie and win it for the Eagles.

The Eagles opened the day with two wins in the doubles competition. The duo of Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) and Caleb Quernmoen (Becker, Minn./Becker) gave UNW the first point with an 8-3 win in the #3 match, and the team of Davis Pfaff (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and Matthew Wedin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) followed with an 8-5 win to put Northwestern up 2-0. The Cardinals took the #2 match as the contest moved to singles play with the Eagles up 2-1.

Morrell and Pfaff each won their singles matches for UNW, with a 6-0, 6-1 win at #4 and a 7-5, 6-2 victory at #1, respectively. With a 4-1 lead, the Eagles looked to be cruising to a swift team win.

However, the Cardinals rallied for three consecutive wins at the #2, #3, and #6 matches to even the contest at 4-4.

Only the #5 singles match remained to decide the winner. For the Eagles, it was up to Geurkink to win it all. The sophomore took an early lead with a 6-2 win in the opening set. The Cardinals countered though with a 6-4 win of their own in set two to send the match to a super tiebreaker to decide it all. Geurkink rallied from the second set loss to win the tiebreaker 10-4 and give UNW the 5-4 win and keep their perfect season alive at 12-0.

Next up for the Eagles is the Oles as UNW hosts St. Olaf on Thursday, April 8, at 4pm.
