ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team hosted Martin Luther College on Saturday afternoon. Scoring a goal each half, the Eagles were able to hold onto the lead to win 2-1.
UNW improves to 7-5 on the season and 3-2 in UMAC play with a three-game win streak.
Northwestern took the first two shots to begin the game. The Eagles out-shot the Knights 16-4 in the first half alone. They had many chances on net before
Taylor Brinkman (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) took a free kick that headed into the box as
Kaylin Strike (Hanover, Minn./Buffalo) found the back of the net to go up 1-0, two minutes before half.
Ellie Fryer (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) recorded four saves in the half.
Megan Moeller (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Christian School) took six shots in the first half to lead the Eagles.
Second half of play began with shots from
Maia Ellenburg (Winona, Minn./Winona) and
Taylor Brinkman (Hudson, Wis./Hudson). A string of passes up the field proved powerful as
Danielle Roberts (Hastings, Minn./Hastings) scored her fifth goal of the season and secured a 2-0 lead for her team. The Eagles controlled much of the ball in the second half and were looking for a shutout until MLC scored in the 78th minute of play.
Only up one, UNW did their best to possess the ball and keep it away from the Knights. At end of regulation, the Eagles came out on top, 2-1.
Northwestern finished the game with 22 shots and six shots-on-goal.
Emily Currie (Minneapolis, Minn./Home School) and
Megan Moeller (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Christian School) each ended the game with six shots.
Danielle Roberts (Hastings, Minn./Hastings) added four shots.
Ellie Fryer (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) had five saves on the day.
The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday as they host the University of Wisconsin-Superior for a 7:30 pm kickoff.
