WAVERLY, Iowa – The University of Northwestern St. Paul Women's Lacrosse team scored 16 times to defeat Wartburg College on Wednesday night.
When the Eagles scored, it was never just once before the Knights could counter. UNW scored five goals to open the match 5-0. Wartburg ended the streak with a goal of their own, but the Eagles quickly answered with two more to go up 7-1. The Knights responded with back-to-back goals of their own, but again the Eagles answered, this time scoring four consecutive to go up 11-3.
Wartburg found a groove and scored thrice in a row to cut the Northwestern lead down to five with 21 minutes remaining, but the Eagles doubled their lead with five more goals to go up 16-6. The Knights scored once more late in the game, but it was too little too late as UNW cruised to their second conference victory of the season.
The Eagles were led by Talia Sherry (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) and her eight points in the match. The senior scored six goals and assisted with two others. Defensively, Sherry was wreaking havoc on the Knights with seven caused turnovers and nine ground balls in the win.
Cara Smith (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) led UNW with three assists in the match to go along with two goals and a team-leading four draw controls. Samantha Wiebold (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) notched a hat trick on just five shots taken. Maddie Nimmo (Somerset, Wis./Hill-Murray) made her shots count as she scored twice on just two shots taken.
Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) saved six shots on goal to protect the Eagles' lead, earning her third win of the season.
Next up for the Eagles is another MWLC match, this time at Cornell College on Saturday, April 17, at 4:30pm.
