GREEN BAY, Wis. – The UNW Eagles played the St. Norbert Knights this afternoon at the Green Bay Tennis Center.
To start the match, the Eagles duo of
Caleb Quernmoen (Becker, Minn./Becker) and
Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) made quick at #3 doubles, winning their match 8-2. Following closely was a win for the #2 doubles tandem of
Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) and
Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) at 8-3. The #1 doubles team of
Davis Pfaff (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and
Matthew Wedin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) couldn't make up the early break they suffered in the match and ended up falling 5-8 in a closely contested match.
The Eagles headed into singles play with a 2-1 lead and quickly added to that lead with
Isaac Velgersdyk (Savage, Minn./Southwest Christian) charging the net on his way to a 6-1, 6-0 victory. In another tight match, Pfaff ended coming up just short in the first set, 4-6, before falling 2-6 in his second set. With the score at 3-2, the Eagles closed the match within 5 minutes with Morrell and Geurkink earning the teams 4th and 5th point, winning 6-2, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-2 respectively.
To add to the victory, Wedin played a gutsy match to emerge victorious with a win in the first set and a 7-5 win in the second set tie breaker. In similar fashion, Ryerse also brought his lunch pal and hard hat, winning his first set and second set tiebreaker 7-5 to get the 7th point for the Eagles.
The Eagles move to 5-0 on the season heading into match play for the second half of their spring break trip.
