Geurkink Clinches 5-4 Win for Men’s Tennis at Loras

CLINTON, Iowa. - The University of Northwestern St. Paul Men's Tennis team rallied to earn a thrilling 5-4 win over Loras College on Tuesday. With the win the Eagles improved to 6-0 on the season.

The Duhawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead early by winning #3 and #2 doubles. The duo of Davis Pfaff (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and Matthew Wedin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) went the distance at #1 doubles for the Eagles, taking the match 8-7.

Trailing 2-1 at the end of doubles, the Eagles needed to win at least four of the six singles matches. Loras had other ideas, and took #6 singles to go up 3-1. Northwestern answered at #3 singles as Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

The Eagles' rally continued as Pfaff proceeded to win his #1 match 6-4, 7-5. Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) followed with a marathon 4-6, 7-6, 10-7 win at #2 singles to give UNW the lead at 4-3.

Facing defeat, the Duhawks stayed alive with a 6-4, 6-2 win at #4 singles to even up the match 4-4.

With the match on the line, everything came down to #5 singles. Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) thrived under the pressure of the moment and earned a 6-4, 6-3 win to give the Eagles the 5-4 team victory and maintain their perfect record.

Next up for Northwestern is a match at Saint Ambrose University Iowa on Wednesday, March 10, at 11am.
