Box Score OSHKOSH, Wis. - The University of Northwestern St. Paul Women's Tennis team battled UW-Oshkosh on Friday evening in their third match of the season. The Eagles improved to 2-1 with a hard-fought 6-3 victory over the Titans.
UNW struck first as
Sabrina Bush (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) and
Taylar Smith (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) took #3 doubles 8-2. The Titans answered with an 8-5 win in the #2 match to even the match score. The duo of
Mafee Rinta (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) and
Belinda Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) fought hard in a marathon set and emerged victorious with an 8-7 (8-6) result at the #1 match.
Leading 2-1 entering singles competition, the Eagles managed to press their advantage and go up 4-1 as Bush (6-0, 6-2) and Smith (6-1, 6-0) won their #5 and #6 matches respectively.
#3 singles went the way of the Titans with a 6-2, 6-1 result to cut the match score to 4-2.
Weddle followed with a decisive 6-0, 6-2 win in the #2 singles match to earn the Eagles the crucial fifth match point and the team win.
Northwestern and Oshkosh split the remaining two matches as
Ellie Dodge (Wahpeton, N.D./Wahpeton) won her #4 contest 6-1, 6-4 and the Titans took the #1 match 6-2, 6-2.
Next up for UNW is a match at St. Norbert College on Saturday, March 6, at 1pm.
