Box Score RIPON, Wis. - The University of Northwestern St. Paul Men's Tennis team improved their perfect record to 4-0 on the season with a 9-0 sweep of Ripon on Friday evening.
The Eagles took control of the match early with a 3-0 sweep in the doubles competition.
Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) and
Isaac Velgersdyk (Savage, Minn./Southwest Christian) put UNW on the board with an 8-0 sweep at #3 doubles. A pair of 8-2 victories in the #2 and #1 matches followed shortly as the contest moved into singles.
UNW kept on rolling through singles.
Darin Rupp (Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt) kept the momentum going with a 6-2, 6-0 win at #6 singles to bring Northwestern within one point of securing that contest. At the #1 singles match,
Davis Pfaff (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) earned the critical fifth match point with a 6-1, 6-2 victory for the Eagles.
With the match in hand, the Eagles closed out the competition with four wins to complete the sweep.
Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) won #5 singles 6-0, 6-0.
Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) followed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at #3.
Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) swept the #4 match, and
Matthew Wedin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) finished the contest with a hard-earned 7-5, 6-4 win at #2 singles.
Next up for Northwestern is a match at St. Norbert on Saturday, March 6, at 1pm.
