Women’s Tennis Narrowly Falls to Cobbers

WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. - After a thrilling win last night, the University of Northwestern St. Paul Women's Tennis team battled the Concordia Cobbers in their second match of the weekend.

Taylar Smith (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) and Ellie Dodge (Wahpeton, N.D./Wahpeton) emerged with a 8-4 victory at #3 doubles to get the Eagles a point going into singles.

The Cobbers pulled ahead to a 3-1 lead with a win at #1 singles. After a tough day yesterday, Jess came out with redemption on her mind and played dominant tennis to pull the Eagles within one point, winning 6-2, 6-1.

With a Cobbers win at #2 singles, Concordia built a 4-2 lead.

The Eagles continued to fight as Sabrina Bush (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) fended off the team match point, winning in a calm and collected match at #5 singles, 6-3, 6-3.

With the Eagles hanging on to a sliver of hope at 3-4, Dodge forced a three-set super tiebreaker after falling in the first set and winning the second set 5-2. In the super breaker, Elli battled as she took an early deficit. Dodge was able to rally but ultimately fell in a close tiebreaker 8-10.

With the Cobbers win at #4 singles, they clinched the match at 5-3 heading into Taylar's singles match. Smith lost the first set but was able to win the second set, forcing a third set super tiebreaker. The super breaker went back and forth with the sophomore able to pull ahead late in the breaker, securing a 10-6 win and bring the Eagles' final match tally to four points.

Next up for Northwestern is a match in Winona as the Eagles travel to take on Saint Mary's University on Friday, March 2, at 11am.
