Scheel Scores Game-Winner in Final Seconds for Women’s Lacrosse

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The University of Northwestern St. Paul Women's Lacrosse team won their road matchup with UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday night with an Abby Scheel (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) game-winner with just 11 seconds remaining in the contest. The 11-10 victory was the first of the season for the Eagles as they improved to 1-1.

The night opened with a 3-0 run by the Blugolds through the first 15 minutes of the opening half. UNW responded emphatically with four straight goals in the next nine minutes to take a 4-3 lead. Eau Claire scored once more to even the contest up at 4-4 going into halftime.

The second half scoring started with the Blugolds finding the net two minutes in to take the 5-4 lead. Northwestern struck back with a flurry of goals, scoring twice in a two-minute span and again with 18:21 remaining to go up 7-5.

The final 14 minutes of play saw nine goals scored between the two teams. The Blugolds tied it up for a second time at 7-7, but again the Eagles answered with a pair of goals to retake the two-goal lead with 8:16 remaining.

UW-Eau Claire managed to find the back of the net twice in the following four minutes to even the game for a third time at 9-9. With 2:28 remaining, Talia Sherry (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) scored her team-leading sixth goal of the match to give UNW a narrow 10-9 lead. Just 20 seconds later, the Blugolds scored to tie the game for a fourth time on the night at 10-10.

With time running out, Mary Schmitz (Isle, Minn./Isle) found Scheel and sent the ball her way. The freshman attacker gathered it and fired past the Blugold goalie to score with just 11 ticks remaining on the game clock. The game-winner was Scheel's second of the game and the third of her collegiate career.

Up next for Northwestern is their home-opener on Saturday, March 27, at 4:30pm in a rematch against Hamline University. The Eagles faced the Pipers in their season-opener on March 17.
