Northwestern Advances to NCCAA Semifinals in Coach Grosz’s 400th Win

Winona Lake, In. - The University of Northwestern men's basketball competed against Lancaster Bible College in the NCCAA D1 National Championship Quarterfinal round in Wednesday night's game. UNW advanced to the Quarterfinals after beating Trinity Christian College at home in the Ericksen Center after a buzzer beater three winning 69-68 this past Saturday.

The Eagles started the game with a bucket from behind the arc by Noah Alm (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake), assisted by Henry Fahnbulleh (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove). Great defense from Northwestern and Lancaster stymied both offenses throughout the game but especially in the first half. At the midway point of the half, the Eagles regained the lead of the seesaw affair with a bucket from Kyle Kaemingk (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) to put UNW up 20-19. The Eagles kept up the momentum and ended up leading by nine points at the break, 30-21. In the first half, one of the key differences was Northwestern netted ten points off Lancaster turnovers compared to two by the Chargers.

The second half started for Northwestern with a long two from Fahnbulleh. Kaemingk followed with an electric and-one on a fast break to give the Eagles an eleven point lead. Northwestern kept the lead around eleven for most of the half. With three minutes left, the Chargers got the lead down to six. After an Owen Boerema (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) made free-throw and a defensive stop, Caleb Waldeck (Newhall, Calif./Hart High) dribbled out the shot clock and hit a fade-away two as the shot clock sounded to extend the lead back to nine with 1:41 to play.

The Chargers wouldn't go quietly though, as Northwestern entered the last minute only up by five points. With four seconds to go, Lancaster hit a deep three to make it a two-point game. After a Lancaster timeout, Waldeck was able to dribble out the clock to secure the 67-65 victory to send the Eagles to the NCCAA semi-finals.

Kyle Kaemingk (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) led the team with 17 points along with nine rebounds, Henry Fahnbulleh (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) added 15 points, and Noah Alm (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) netted 11 points.

The win was Coach Tim Grosz's 400th win as the head men's basketball coach of the Eagles. He is a combined 400-195 over the past 21 seasons.

Northwestern was 68.8 percent from the free throw line and 44.1 percent from field goal range for the game. UNW netted eight fast break points and 15 points off Lancaster turnovers.

The Eagles are set to play in the semifinals tomorrow night at 7:45 against Grace College hosted in Winona Lake, Indiana.
