MINEAPOLIS – The University of Northwestern St. Paul Baseball team rallied for seven runs in the top of the ninth inning for an incredible 10-6 win over the University of Wisconsin Whitewater on Tuesday at US Bank Stadium. It was a monumental win on a fittingly big stage, as UW-Whitewater entered the game ranked as the No. 14 DIII baseball team in the nation by D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Trailing 6-3 with only three outs to go, the Eagles needed clutch hitting to keep hope alive.
Keegan Vercoe (Queen Creek, Ariz./Poston Butte) delivered with a bases-clearing triple to tie up the game and ignite the Eagle dugout. The senior's game tying hit and presence at third was enough to cause a critical distraction for Whitewater, as they balked to send Vercoe home and give Northwestern the lead.
Having taken the lead while recording no outs, the Eagles still didn't let up. Once more Northwestern loaded the bases, and once more they cleared the bases with a single swing of the bat as
Mason Skrede (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) sent a double to left that scored all three baserunners to give UNW the 10-6 lead and eventual win.
Next up for Northwestern is the University of St. Thomas, as the two face off in a doubleheader on Thursday, March 11, at Reynolds Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4pm.
