LAKEVILLE, Minn. - The University of Northwestern St. Paul Men's Tennis team took on the University of Dubuque on Friday night. The Eagles soared to a 9-0 sweep over the Spartans to stay a perfect 3-0 on the year.
The Eagles opened the contest with a strong showing in doubles competition. The duo of
Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) and
Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) rolled to an 8-0 win at the #3 spot.
Davis Pfaff (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and
Matthew Wedin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) followed shortly with an 8-1 victory in the #1 match. The Eagles completed the doubles sweep as
Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) and
Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) defeated the Spartans 8-3 at #2.
Up 3-0, UNW's success continued in singles.
Isaac Velgersdyk (Savage, Minn./Southwest Christian) opened the singles competition with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at the #6 spot. Up 4-0, the Eagles clinched the match victory as
Stewart Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) kept up the sweeping trend with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #4 singles.
The remaining four matches all went the Eagles way. Wedin won the #2 match 6-2, 6-4. Pfaff followed with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at #1. Geurkink took down the Spartans 6-0, 6-1 at the #5 match, and Ryerse completed the Eagles' sweep with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at #3 singles.
Next up for Northwestern is the Spring Tennis Trip, starting with a match at Ripon College on March 5 at 5pm.
