SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Northwestern women's soccer team competed in the UMAC Tournament Championship game on Saturday against the University of Wisconsin Superior. The Eagles rallied late in the second half, but the Yellowjackets held on for a 3-2 win.
UWS scored twice in a three minutes span early in the opening half to go up 2-0 just 16 minutes in. The Yellowjackets added another goal in the 63
rd minute to take a 3-0 lead.
UNW never gave up the fight and scored in the 70
th minute as
Megan Kohrt (Monona, Wis./Homeschool) took a pass from
Maia Ellenburg (Winona, Minn./Winona) and buried a shot in the back right of the net.
As UW-Superior did in the first half, the Eagles scored twice within three minutes as
Amanda Kocurek (North Branch, Minn./North Branch) scored with
Mya Chan (Brandon, S.D./Homeschool) assisting at 73:34. The Yellowjacket defense would hold, however, for the remainder of the game and UWS held on to win the title 3-2.
Ellie Fryer (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) had five saves in goal for the Eagles, matching the same number of saves as the Yellowjacket keeper.
Northwestern's NCAA season comes to a close with a record of 12-6-2 overall and an 11-1-2 run in conference matches. The 12 win season is the first with that many for the program since 2017 and is just the second since 2011.
