Mullin Scores Game Winner to Send the Eagles to the UMAC Tournament Championship Game

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The UNW Women's Soccer team had a remarkable regular season finishing 11-1-2 and was rewarded with the #2 seed in the UMAC Tournament and hosted Bethany Lutheran in the semifinal at Reynolds Field. The Eagles won the match and earned a berth in the UMAC Championship game on the road on Saturday against UW-Superior.

The semifinal game marked a rematch between the Eagles and the Vikings as the two teams squared off exactly one week earlier. That game was a defensive battle as it ended in a 0-0 draw between the two teams. Through one half, the playoff game followed the same script.

The #2 seeded Eagles and the #3 seeded Vikings entered the halftime break in a scoreless tie. Despite being kept off the scoreboard, the Eagles were creating chances. The home team had seven shots in the first period, while the visitors had two of their own. In addition to the large amount of shots, UNW also had four corner kick opportunities in the first half. However, despite the scoring chances, the Eagles continued to be kept out of the back of the net by strong goalkeeping and defense by the Vikings.

However, after three halves and two periods of overtime of scoreless soccer played between these two squads over the last week, the floodgates were finally opened in the 67th minute. A handball resulted in a penalty kick for the Eagles as the match entered the late stages. After some deliberation as to who would take the penalty kick, RJ Mullin (Temecula, Calif./Rancho Christian) was chosen. This would prove to be the right choice. The senior remained cool, calm, and collected and buried the penalty kick in the back of the net. The Eagles would hold on to that 1-0 lead, and win the semifinal matchup.

The goal was Mullin's third of the season. Megan Moeller (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Christian School) added four shots to the Eagles' offensive effort, and Kaylin Strike (Hanover, Minn./Buffalo) and Amanda Kocurek (North Branch, Minn./North Branch) each had one a piece.

Ellie Fryer (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) had two saves and collected her fourth shutout of the season.

With the victory, the Eagles advance to the UMAC Tournament Championship game. The #2 seed UNW will travel to the #1 seed UW-Superior. The top seeded Yellowjackets did not lose a game in conference play this season, but did have one draw and that came against the Eagles. Wisconsin-Superior won their semifinal game 6-0 over #4 Minnesota-Morris.

The championship game will take place on Saturday, November 5th at 2:00pm. Eagle fans can find schedule updates, links to live video and stats, and results on unweagles.com.
