SUPERIOR, Wis. – The No. 16 nationally ranked University of Northwestern volleyball team traveled to the University of Wisconsin Superior on Friday for their first conference road game of the season. The Eagles continued their success in UMAC play with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-11) sweep of the Yellowjackets.
UNW fell behind 4-1 early in the opening set of the match, but then won the next five points to go up 6-4. The five-point run was the longest of that opening set, as both teams battled back and forth. The Eagles capitalized with a pair of three-point runs starting at 14-14 and 20-16 to give them the advantage in the set, and closed it out with a win at 25-18.
The second set was once again closely contested. UWS again took an early lead at 6-2. The Eagles responded by winning the next six points to take an 8-6 lead. Northwestern would hold the lead for the remainder of the set, but the Yellowjackets were always right on the Eagles' tail. UNW would hold strong, and win it 25-22.
After a pair of set wins that were too close for comfort, Northwestern was once again trailing early in the third set at 8-7. At that moment, the Eagles found a spark that set off an offensive bombardment as UNW went on an incredible 18-3 run to close out the match and slam the door shut on the 3-0 sweep. With the win, UNW remained undefeated in UMAC matches at 6-0 with victories by sweep in every one of them.
Abby Glanzer (Brandon, S.D./Sioux Falls Christian) led the offensive attack for the Eagles, averaging 5.00 kills per set at 15 and getting 11 digs for a double-double.
Caitlyn Pruis (Sioux Falls, SD./Sioux Falls Christian) hit a fantastic .692 for the second most kills in the match with nine.
Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACCRAY), fresh off of reaching 4,000 career assists on Tuesday, recorded another 39 for an average of 13.00 per set while contributing defensively with 13 digs.
Marylyn Schroyer (Ft. Collins, Colo./Ft. Collins) led Northwestern with 22 digs in the match for an average of 7.33 per set.
Next up for Northwestern is another road conference contest, this time at Northland College. The Eagles face the Lumberjills on Saturday, October 9, starting at 6 p.m. in Ashland, Wisconsin.
