Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | David Pederson

A Pair of Eagles Score Their First Goals of the Season as the Eagles Stay Perfect in Conference Play

MANKATO, Minn.- The UNW Women's Soccer Team played in their fifth UMAC game on Saturday afternoon, squaring off with Bethany Lutheran. All five of their conference games have been on the road, and the Eagles have been perfect during this stretch, starting their season 5-0 in conference action. Today's matchup with the Vikings was the fifth and final consecutive road game for UNW, and the Eagles ended this stretch with a 2-1 win.

Goals were hard to come by early in this contest. The teams entered halftime locked in a scoreless tie. Each team fired five shots during the first half, but nobody was able to find the back of the net.

In the 57th minute, it was a defender for the Eagles who got the party started. Natalie Moeller (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Christian) scored her first goal of the season as she went top shelf to beat the keeper. This was the third goal of Moeller's career, and it was an important one to break the tie and to bring momentum over to the Eagles' sideline.

The offensive adjustments made by the Eagles at the half worked, as UNW kept the offense coming in the second half. In the 71st minute, it was Emma Wheeler's (Elgin, Minn./Pem) turn to score her first goal of the season. Not only was this Wheeler's first goal of the season, this marked the first goal of the freshman's career. Wheeler beat the keeper on the left side of the net to put the Eagles up 2-0.

Bethany Lutheran would chip into the lead with a Juana Quevedo goal in the 88th minute, but it would not be enough as the Eagles would hold on to win by a score of 2-1.

It is not often that you see a game as evenly played as this one was. The shot tally was tied at ten. Each team had seven shots on goal. It was a back and forth game that was well played on both sides.

Ellie Fryer (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) continues to be steady for the Eagles in net helping them to this undefeated start to conference play. The senior had six saves.

The Eagles have nearly a week to recover after playing in five consecutive conference road games. UNW is back in action on Friday, October 8th in a "battle of the unbeaten" as they host Wisconsin-Superior. The Yellowjackets are 5-0 in conference play, and were the preseason favorite to win the conference. UNW will host UW-Superior on Friday.
