ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The University of Northwestern women's basketball team hosted Martin Luther College in Saturday afternoon action in the Ericksen Center. The non-conference match-up was the first game for the Knights of the 2020-21 season and the eighth for the Eagles. UNW was led by Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian), scoring 18 to an easy 90-62 win.
Northwestern moves to 5-3 on the season, while Martin Luther falls to 0-1. The Eagles extend their 14 game winning streak to 15 over the Knights with the Saturday afternoon win.
Scoring started early with a Hailey Paup (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Concordia Academy) jumper to begin a nine point run by UNW. Quarter one ended with a 17 point lead for the Eagles, 26-9 over the Knights. Northwestern shot 53 percent to Martin Luther's 13.
UNW continued to climb and play solid defense as the second quarter began. The Eagles added another 25 points to the Knights 16. Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian) led the half with 14 points, Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) had 11 and Courtney Schmidt (Spring Valley, Minn./Kingsland) added eight.
Coming out of the half, Northwestern did not slow up out-scoring the Knights 20-14. Hailey Paul scored six for UNW. The Eagles biggest lead was by 34 points, close to the end of the third.
Fourth quarter play was much as the same as Northwestern closed out the game.
Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian) scored 18 points, Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) added 15 and Courtney Schmidt (Spring Valley, Minn./Kingsland) tied her career high with 14. Jordan Sauve (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) dished out nine assists, her career high.
The Eagles are back in action Wednesday, January 27th as they travel to Crown College to take on the Storm, tip-off is slated for 7 pm.
