ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Northwestern men's tennis team opened up spring break play on Monday at the USTA National Tennis Center. The Eagles met up with DeSales University Monday morning, battling to a 5-4 win before taking down Franciscan University, 6-3 in evening action.
Northwestern 5, DeSales 4
Northwestern increases their win streak to five straight and hold a 5-2 mark this season. UNW will take on Ursinus College in Tuesday night play.
The no. 2 and 3 doubles teams picked up wins, giving UNW a one match lead heading into singles play.
Jack Geurkink (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) and
Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) picked up an 8-6 win at no. 2, while
Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) and
Isaac Velgersdyk (Savage, Minn./Southwest Christian)e added an 8-6 win at no. 3.
In singles play, it was
Matthew Wedin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield),
Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) and
Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) who helped the Eagles capture the 5-4 victory. Wedin overcame a set two defeat to win the third set super tiebreaker, 10-8. Studer captured a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) win at no. 4.
Norrthwestern 6, Franciscan 3
The Eagles kept it rolling in Monday's second match-up, as UNW's no. 2 and 3 doubles squads rolled to another set of wins.
This time it was
Davis Pfaff (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) who overcame a second set loss to win in a 10-5 tiebreak at no. 1 singles. Northwestern's no. 4 through 6 positions picked up the final three wins (
Tyrus Studer (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens),
Adam Ryerse (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) and
Joel Fremling (Aitkin, Minn./Hudson), respectively).
The wins marked Ryerse's and Studer's fifth straight in singles play.
