Strong Start Propels Eagles to 76-49 Win Over MLC on Senior Day

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The University of Northwestern women's basketball team hosted Martin Luther College in a conference match-up Saturday evening. The Eagles outscored the Knights by nearly 10 points in each of the first three quarters to secure a 76-49 final win.

The Eagles move to 14-8 overall and 10-3 in the UMAC, while Martin Luther falls to 3-18 this season, 3-10 in league play.

Martin Luther led for just the first 30 seconds before Northwestern would take over. UNW outscored the Knights 20-7 in the first quarter, propelled by two Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) three pointers and a team total of five blocks.

Northwestern would continue to extend their lead, moving the basketball smoothly and playing solid defense in second quarter action. The Eagles scored 13 fast break points in the first half, with their biggest lead (30) coming with just under three minutes left in the half. They entered the break up, 47-17.

Third quarter play brought more of the same energy by UNW, with high scoring and intense defense. Northwestern did the most damage in the paint, scoring 50 points to the Knights' 26.

Four Eagles finished with double-digit scoring totals led by Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) with 15. Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) added 12 points on the night, while Grace Langmade (Pine City, Minn./Pine City) and Rio Landers (Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow) finished with 10. Landers also tacked on 13 boards to record a double-double on senior day.

Landers and Shania Bell (Billings, Mont./Billings Christian) were honored prior to Saturday's game as UNW's only seniors this season. The duo have collectively been a part of 42 Northwestern wins and helped the Eagles to 3rd and 4th place finishes in the UMAC and three UMAC Tournament playoff berths.

The Eagles will continue conference play on Wednesday night as they host Bethany Lutheran College. Tip-off begins at 7:15 for the women.
